Another stayer
n 1990, Kumar Mahadevan opened his first restaurant, Abhi, in North Strathfield. Before that he was one of the famous ‘Taj Boys’ who started cooking at the Taj Intercontinental in Bombay before coming to Australia in 1985 as head chef at the late-lamented Mayur in Sydney. Word spread rapidly about the food at Abhi’s, not least because the reigning queen of Asian cooking, Charmaine Solomon, lives just around the corner and sang Kumar’s praises. Abhi, named after Kumar’s first son, was joined in 2005 by Woolloomooloo’s Aki’s, named after number two son.
And if you want to join in the celebrations, on July 13, 14 and 15 (better get in quick), there are three Anniversary Dinners to commemorate with a special menu.
