Recently, I tried two very different iced Christmas puds. First, from multi-award-winning icecream maker Gundowring, a rich, creamy, chunky Christmas pud icecream produced on the farm in the lush Kiewa Valley in northeastern Victoria. Second, nothing could be further from the green and tranquil Kiewa Valley than bustling downtown Glebe, where there’s a brand-new (to Sydney, anyway) gelato maker on that recently revived and buzzy block just around from Broadway (62 Glebe Point Road, Glebe Ph 0404 852 021).

Their gelato, made by Francesco Gobbato, who’s on a teaching visit from his own gelateria in Milano, is the real deal. I tried the Christmas pudding gelato and did a classic double take. I walked out of the shop, had a lick — and stopped in my tracks. This was smooth, spicy and very … gelato. There’s a lot of ordinary gelato around, and only a bit of good stuff. This is really good.

I’ve been back since and learnt that owner Michael della Penna is from Perth, where he had a franchised gelato operation. Figuring that this was not a good idea (hard to keep the quality up), he came to Sydney, opened in Glebe and will open maybe one more shop. Worth a visit.
