Erf hour

I’m still not convinced that Earth Hour isn’t a bit of a token gesture (how about we work towards closing the coal mines?), but when environmentally aware chefs like Alex Herbert at Bird Cow Fish (500 Crown Street, Surry Hills Ph 9380 4489) put on sustainable dinners in support, you have to concede that maybe it is reaching out. We ate excellent and sustainable tucker (my favourite the Cape Grim pasture fed beef cheek  and Jerusalem artichoke pie) and drank wines from Frogmore in Tasmania, made by Tony Scherer, who before he began making organic wines was an organic vegie grower in California for the likes of Alice Water at Chez Panisse. If his vegies were as good as his wines — we all loved the 2004 Evermore Sparkling Cuvee — we want some. As a matter of fact, we got some. As we left the restaurant, we were handed a couple of bulbs of his organic garlic. You can find the Frogmore wines at Five Way Cellars (4 Heeley Street, Paddington Ph 9360 4242). Amusing sidelight: the whole hour that the lights were off, there was a light shop across Crown Street with lights ablaze
