Mudgee at St Leonards

September 2010

Went to the Mudgee wine and produce promo at Olio Mediterranean Brasserie ( The Forum 201 Pacific Highway St Leonards, Ph 9439 8988) I mentioned in the August column. And what a good night it was (did any of you go?), with terrific wines on offer from some of Mudgee’s top producers and good produce passed around in bite-sized form. My favourites from the wine list were a superb Huntingdon Estate Block 3 Cabernet Sauvignon and their 2005 Semillon; the Lowe Wine Company’s (they’ve dropped the Family from the name since the merger with Louee) 2008 Tinja Pinot Noir and 2006 Old Vine Shiraz from Frog Rock. Strange that there was only one organic wine on show (the Tinja), but on the other hand I know many of the winemakers up there and, as it is the organic wine capital of NSW, they’re pretty careful with their chemical use. Olio is a terrific spot and right on the railway station concourse – the little nibbles we tasted were evidence of a fine chef in the kitchen, Damien Naughton last seen at La Grillade. We’ll be back.
