Organic wars

September 2009

August saw yet another attack on organic food, this one from the English Food Standards Association (FSA) which concluded that: “In our view, the current scientific evidence does not show that organic food is any safer or more nutritious than conventionally produced food.”

As you can imagine, this got right up the noses of most of the organic food bodies around the world — and mine. The Organic Federation of Australia replied by pointing out that international scientists have found the FSA report “deeply flawed” and that it “ignored 15 recent studies, included obsolete studies and made a conclusion that contradicts its own data”. You can see both sides of the argument at www.food.gov.uk and at www.ofa.org.au. Make up your own mind. Me, I fail to see how food without residual herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones can help but be a better choice.
