GOLDEN UNICORN
Cuisine: Chinese
This is the east’s answer to a Chinatown yum cha. Walk up the staircase of Maroubra’s shopping complex to this huge, Hong Kong-like, busy open space filled with families, students and everyone in between of both Asian and Caucasian backgrounds. The hordes are here for lunchtime yum cha (book in advance or be prepared to wait in line), waving down trolleys loaded with steaming treasures such as dumplings and sweet custard buns. At night, the menu expands to include typical Chinese mains, such as the popular chicken and prawns with black pepper $25.80 and Peking duck $46.80 (for 12 people) or $28.80 (half a duck feeds six). Consider the jumbo Tasmanian oysters and baby abalone, $6.80 each, when they’re in season — well worth it, we say.
