PORTOBELLO PIZZA & PASTA RESTAURANT
Cuisine: Italian
This is a great local pizza joint, whether you’re taking away or eating in. It’s smallish, but that adds to the cosy family atmosphere, enhanced further by a blue-and-coral Mediterranean-style colour theme. Mains are straightforward (veal/chicken with chips or salad), so look to pasta and pizza for the gems. The “gourmet” items are named after cities: we’re not sure why chicken Phuket pizza has yoghurt, mint and Indian spices $13.50-$24.50 but it’s good, with a crispy base. The more the merrier seems to be the approach with gourmet toppings, so choose traditional $13–$23 for “less-is-more”. Pasta dishes are aromatic and al dente, ranging from regular (arrabiata $10.50) to beyond-the-norm, such as allasoro with prawns, bacon and snowpeas in a napoletana sauce $14. It’s a busy, family-friendly place so prepare for a little noise on Friday and Saturday nights.
