A quiet, Spartan little cafe by day, dealing as much with takeaway as eat-in business, Emon cranks up a notch at night with the help of glowing tealights and a slightly bigger menu. But it doesn’t matter when you come — by day for a set lunch of Kurobuta pork tonkatsu with salad, miso and rice $12.50, or by night for a spanking-fresh plate of tuna and salmon sashimi $26 —you’ll always get dishes made from scratch with great produce. An all-day favourite is the signature okonomi-yaki pancake $14.50/$16.50 thick, eggy, studded with pork or seafood and cabbage and topped with squiggles of special sweet sauce, mayonnaise and a heap of bonito flakes. And good teas $3–$4 are all served in Japanese ceramics.
